The Gottman Method includes several exciting features that set it apart from traditional couples therapy:

1. Unleashing the Power of the Gottman Method: The Love Lab Assessment Edge

In traditional couples therapy, the therapist usually starts by assessing and planning treatment in the first session. This might or might not include relationship surveys. In comparison, the Gottman Love Lab assessment is a more detailed process. It happens over several days. The Love Lab assessment looks at the relationship as a whole and at each partner separately. Also, it measures how each person reacts physically to conflict. This assessment covers all parts of the Gottman Sound Relationship House theory.

The Love Lab includes detailed online surveys called the Gottman Relationship Checkup. In addition, a video review is made of two conversations between you and your partner. You will also take part in three 90-minute sessions with Craig Tucker, LCSW, to better understand your relationship.

During the first assessment session, we take an detailed relationship history. Then, in the second session, we spend 45-minute with each partner for individual assessments. Finally, in the third session, we review all the information from the relationship surveys, video reviews, and interview sessions to get a clearer understanding of your relationship.

We create a written plan that fits the specific needs of your relationship. As a result, you will also get a detailed written report. Furthermore, after finishing the assessment, you’ll have full access to the Gottman Relationship Coach tutorial series. For some couples, the insights from the assessment are enough to help them make the changes they need. The total cost for the Love Lab assessment is $1,239.00.

2. Experience Unmatched Growth with the Gottman Method Therapy Process

The Gottman Method Sound Relationship House Model

We finish the assessment phase before starting couples therapy. After that, each couples therapy session lasts at least 90-minutes. We met least once a week at first. Moreover, Marathon sessions are also an option, lasting up to 6 hours a day over 3 days. In couple therapy sessions, we work on the Sound Relationship House. Also, we deal with issues the couple brings, like current problems, gridlocked conflicts, or past hurts.

We create a safe space to help heal old hurts and betrayals. We also guide conversations around gridlocked issues and daily challenges. In each session, we use proven methods to build safety and understanding. When possible, we help find compromises and encourage acceptance of differences. We also use video recordings and heart monitoring as teaching tools during Gottman Therapy sessions.

As you learn the principles, we spread out the sessions and shorten them to 45 minutes. Over time, you won’t need a therapist in your relationship anymore.

3. Why More Time Means Greater Progress in Gottman Method Therapy

Traditional couples therapy sessions usually last 45 to 50 minutes. However, the Gottman Method offers 90-minute sessions each week or even more often. Consequently, these longer sessions give each partner time to share their perspective, understand each other, and practice new skills to fix issues. Moreover, Dr. Gottman has shown that spending more time early in therapy leads to better results. While the 90-minute sessions are more helpful than traditional ones, the best option is the Intensive Marathon Session.

Why Gottman Method Intensive Marathon Sessions Deliver Superior Results

Dr. John Gottman emphasizes that the intensive marathon approach gives the best results. This is true because we can concentrate on healing the deepest betrayals, long-lasting pain, and stuck conflicts without being distracted by day to day challenges. These marathons include 16.5 hours of assessment and therapy over one weekend (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday), and 1.5 hours of individual assessment prior to the weekend, for a total of 18 hours. The structure is outlined as follows:

  • We schedule a 45-minute individual assessment for each partner before the marathon begins. These assessments can be conducted either in my office or through a video conference on my website.
  • You must complete all Gottman Assessment forms online before the start of the marathon.

Furthermore, it gives results similar to six months of regular couples therapy. In addition, surveys show that 94% of couples who attend feel it was helpful. TuckerWorks holds Art and Science of Love Workshops the second weekend of every month. To explore this further, you can learn more about our next Art and Science of Love Workshop here.
